For the majority of the population, high protein diets are not the best option. You see, your body functions best when on a steady diet of slow digesting carbohydrates.

On the flip side, there are very specific situations where a high protein diet may be better.

So here is when to consider a high protein diet:

1. If you are trying to get your body fat ridiculously low: Now we’re talking about going from eight percent body fat to six percent body fat here. Otherwise, you are far better off sticking with an ample amount of carbohydrates.

2. If you are getting too hungry: Feelings of hunger have biological and psychological roots. And of all the macronutrients, protein creates the highest level of fullness. So if you are suffering from unstoppable hunger pangs, increase protein intake.

3. When your cells resist the action of insulin: Insulin is a hormone responsible for getting the nutrients from digested food into your cells. And if you are insulin resistant a higher percentage of nutrients go to your fat cells.

4. When you need a dietary change: Going on a high protein diet for a short period of time because you need a change in your diet should be fine. The key here is the duration of the high protein intake. But for those wishing for some short term variety, this strategy should be fine.

5. When you hardly move around: Sedentary living reduces the need for carbohydrates. In fact, you should only eat whole grains around periods of intense physical activity. Otherwise, stick to beans and legumes. And if you are very sedentary, a high protein diet may get you better results.

6. When levels of iron are low: Low levels of iron can deplete you of any willpower to keep moving forward. After all, iron helps your body get oxygen from your blood. And oxygen is vital for the production of energy in your cells.

High protein diets usually do more harm than good. But if you fall into any of the above situations, you may want to consider a high protein diet in the short term!
